In Windows 10, Windows Update provides the mechanism to download and install patches to fix bugs, vulnerabilities, or improve the overall experience. Microsoft also uses this mechanism to update many of its products (for example, Office) and to update the system to the latest version of the operating system.
While for the most part you don't need to adjust any settings as updates run automatically, sometimes to get the most out of Windows Update you need to make sure you have the correct settings.
In this guide, you will learn the steps to configure advanced Windows Update settings in Windows 10.
Change Windows Update settings in Windows 10
To adjust the Windows Update settings, follow these steps:
-
To open Definitions on Windows 10.
-
click on Update and security.
-
click on Windows update.
-
Click on Advanced options button.
-
turn on the Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows Light switch. (This includes Office, Microsoft hardware software, and other standalone products. However, many apps now receive updates from the Microsoft Store.)
-
turn off the Download updates on limited connections (additional charges may apply) Light switch. (Enable this option only if you have enough data on your cellular plan and the upgrade is absolutely necessary.)
-
turn off the Restart this device as soon as possible when a restart is required to install an update toggle button to prevent accidental restarts during active computer use.
-
turn on the Displays a notification when the PC requires a restart to complete the update Light switch.
-
In the "Pause updates" section, use the drop-down menu to select how long you want to prevent Windows 10 from installing updates. (Normally you don't want to change the option unless you want to skip an update.)
After completing the steps, the system will update and behave according to the specified settings.
