Storage Settings: "We couldn't find any folders to show you"

Windows 10's Storage Settings app gives you a great view of how memory is being consumed on your system. Indeed, if you connect an external hard drive to it, the archiving function also extends to it. It's a nice feature but has occasional problems.

Many times, when you try to see which folders are taking up space on a drive, you get the message: "We couldn't find any folders to show you". The Settings app doesn't show anything else, and you can't see folders taking up space. Here's how you can fix the problem.

Also, one of these solutions may help you, so try to try them all.

Close and reopen the Settings app

This application can give you a purely aesthetic insight into how memory is being used on your system. But it doesn't work well when it comes to updating storage usage in real time. Often, if you delete a folder, the app crashes or doesn't update storage usage after deletion.

Also, the "Cannot find folders to show you" issue may disappear if you close and reopen the Settings app. Additionally, it may also be worth rebooting your system.

Update the storage driver

First, open Device Manager and search for Storage Controllers. Expand it and select the device below. Now, double click to open its properties. Go to the "Driver" tab and click Update Driver.

Additionally, Windows 10 will check for driver updates that may be available and install them. You should now restart Windows 10 and you should be able to see space usage in the Settings app.

Storage settings: remove external drives and devices

The storage card can accurately display the used space for external drives, however they sometimes cause inconvenience. If you have external drives and devices connected to your system, you should remove them.

Next, you need to restart your system and then open the Settings app. It should now show you the folders that are taking up space on your computer.

Also, this is a fairly simple mistake and shouldn't be too difficult to fix. The three solutions above, as simple as they are, should work like a charm.

In rare cases, this would have to do with folder permissions, in which case you'd have to manually track down a folder that the Settings app can't access.

And finally, outside of the latter exception, there isn't much that can prevent storage information from being reported to the Settings app.
